Cozy Comforts
Adult ‘play clothes’ were all the rage at this season's MAGIC Las Vegas.
A loungewear renaissance is among us. Comfort is still cool, but for the FW25/26 season, cozy and kitsch have collided to create a lively take on adult ‘play clothes.’ Dubbed ‘Camp Cozy” by MMGNET’s FW 25/26 Women’s Young Contemporary Buyer’s Guide, this playful trend is a feast for the senses — the ideal mix of fun and function — “with eye-popping hues, modified motifs, fuzzy fabrics, and plenty of layers.”
Beyond basic hoodies, leggings, and sweatsuits, ‘Camp Cozy’ includes bold knitwear (including oversized cardigans and Fair Isle intarsias), statement coats (think: shearling bomber jackets or fuzzy cocoons), and nostalgic-meets-kitschy accessories like chunky clogs and irregular shaped eyewear. The through-line is a combination of retro and novelty, converging tactile materials with conversational prints and fun colors. It offers an “upbeat message for the season ahead” — an opportunity to get creative, without sacrificing comfort. “While traditional loungewear was mostly just for chilling at home, today’s ‘play clothes’ are totally stylish and comfortable enough to wear outside,” says Bill Kim, senior account executive at iconic hat and accessory label C.C. “With all sorts of cool materials and playful designs, these [pieces] are perfect for everyday outfits.”
From revving up the volume to mixing materials, brands at this season's MAGIC Las Vegas shared what buyers should look for when embracing a fun twist on old-school loungewear.
THE BIGGER THE BETTER
“Oversized fits are definitely in,” Kim says. “When shopping for adult ‘play clothes,’ it’s all about finding cool materials, like vegan fur, or fun textures, like fleece and sherpa, that add some extra volume.” While impactful on their own, piling the pieces together is what makes this trend stand out. Per the Women’s Young Contemporary Buyer’s Guide, “layering is encouraged with voluminous proportions” for maximum impact. Look for pieces that have a convertible shape, textured lining, or slightly cropped silhouette to show off its size — and styling prowess.
FOCUS ON FABRICS
Shape is one component to items that allow “freedom of movement and ease,” says designer of cold-weather accessories brand Mitchie's Matchings, Susan Cameron. The other is what they’re made of. Tactile wintery surfaces provide a novelty statement on outerwear, while “fabrics like leather and genuine fur provide a sustainable alternative to vegan and faux leather.” Rugged textiles like denim — particularly with low-slung waistlines and in slouchy shapes — cotton twill, and moleskin are important for balancing out the kitsch of the trend and look great when paired with more elevated favorites like brushed suede or plush corduroy.”
PRINT WORKS
Knitwear isn’t just a vehicle for comfort, it’s also a way to incorporate fun, conversational prints — be it naturescape graphics or color blocks — onto pieces, from sweaters to scarves and hats. “Using prints or designs that touch on regional or social issues can show your personality and keep things fresh,” Kim adds. “Quirky elements like that add a personal touch.” ‘Camp Cozy’ is all about injecting a dose of humor into heritage, and nothing does that better than a vivid image or in-your-face pattern.
